Every Dubai hot air balloon flight follows roughly the same shape: pickup between 3:45 and 4:30 AM, a short transfer to the launch site, balloon inflation while it’s still dark, launch right around sunrise, 45 to 60 minutes in the air, then landing, camp activities (on Deluxe and above), and drop-off back at your hotel. Here’s what each stage actually looks like.

What time does a Dubai balloon flight start?

Your day starts with hotel pickup, scheduled between 3:45 and 4:30 AM depending on your specific booking — you’ll get the exact time confirmed by WhatsApp or email the evening before, by 8 PM. It feels early because it is; the whole schedule works backward from sunrise, which shifts slightly through the season (a little later in December, a little earlier by March).

What happens between pickup and launch (3:45–5:30 AM)?

After pickup, it’s a drive of roughly 45 minutes to an hour out to the desert launch site near the edge of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, depending on your hotel’s location. On arrival, the crew is usually already unpacking and laying out the balloon envelope. You’ll have a few minutes to use the facilities, grab a hot drink, and watch the setup before boarding.

What is inflation and launch like?

This is one of the most photographed parts of the morning, and for good reason. Cold air is blown into the envelope first using a large fan while it lies flat on the ground, then the burner ignites and hot air takes over — you’ll see the fabric slowly rise and take shape, lit from inside by the burner’s orange glow against the still-dark sky. Once the balloon is upright and the basket is stable, you board, and launch happens gently: a slow, steady lift rather than a sudden jolt.

What do you see during the 45–60 minutes in the air?

Once airborne, the desert unfolds below in a way that’s hard to appreciate from the ground — rippled dune shadows stretching for miles, the color shifting from indigo to gold as the sun clears the horizon, and if you’re lucky, camels or oryx moving across the sand far below. The flight itself is smooth and largely quiet, punctuated by occasional bursts from the burner. On Deluxe, Premium, Heritage and Overnight flights, a trained falcon often joins the balloon at altitude — genuinely one of the more memorable moments of the flight.

When does the falcon show happen?

The falcon typically flies alongside the balloon during the flight itself, at altitude — a falconer coordinates the timing from the ground or a nearby vehicle. On packages that include it, you’ll also get a closer look and photos with the falcon and its handler once you’re back on the ground at the camp.

What is landing like — is it rough?

Landing is a controlled, gradual skid rather than a hard stop. Because it depends on wind direction, the exact landing spot can shift, but ground crew track the balloon by vehicle throughout the flight and are waiting when you touch down. Before landing, the crew briefs everyone on the brace position — hold the rope handles, knees slightly bent — which makes the actual touchdown feel far less abrupt than first-timers often expect.

What happens at the Bedouin camp after landing?

This is where the packages start to differ. On the Standard Flight, you head straight back to your hotel after landing. On Deluxe and Premium, you’re driven to a Bedouin-style camp for a falconry display, a short camel ride, and a full buffet breakfast — croissants, cold platters, fresh fruit and hot food, laid out for the group. Heritage and Overnight guests get a vintage Land Rover safari through the reserve and an à la carte breakfast instead of the standard buffet.
